In response to my brief research this morning I wanted to continue to work physically. I really wanted to visually convey the idea of highlighting the physicality and soul that is overlooked within the genre. To do this, I decided to partake in some graphic notation - visualising the sounds of the music. I decided to use a multitude of tools to provide an array of textures and colours. This included markers, oil pastels, and coloured pencils. I tried to explore a range of visual styles focusing on shape, texture, and colour. However, I was really struggling to get the right tone of voice for the music. It's something quite new to me, so I felt that I didn't know how to appropriately translate it on to the paper. It felt very wrong and unrelated to my practise. The naivety of the shapes along with the pastel colours felt worlds away from the Techno genre. In some senses, bright lurid colours are appropriate - however, in this sense nothing felt right.
Despite feeling very unconfident in this idea, I persevered and tried to create some digital adaptations. I wanted to create a nice blend of physical and digital to try and convey the genre - however, this is something that I think I need to focus on later in the design development. For now, I really really need to focus on generating stronger initial ideas. I am not happy with the work that I am currently producing - especially the above posters. The tone is not right for the genre, and I want to explore different avenues. However, although I have done a great deal of visual research, upon reflection I have definitely not done enough contextual. My aim now is to take a step back from producing visuals to do a lot more research so that my ideas can be a lot more interesting and informed. I am going to dive deep into the genre of Techno and try and find some niche, interesting facts that hopefully will spur me on to create some visually more interesting and better work than the above.
If I had to say one positive thing about the posters that I have made I would say that I enjoy the motion and dynamic within the second poster. This is definitely my favourite of the three - I think that Cooper Black paired with the naïve sketches gives a fun and playful tone that I want to try and hold on to.
