As I was creating initial experiments I wasn't feeling confident that my outcomes were as informed by contextual research as they could be. Although I've explored examples of events companies as well as done a lot of visual research - I want to delve deeper into the genres to get a better understanding of them and also create visuals that are more informed.
My friend who is also doing a music based project shared this article with me that highlights the relationship between design and sound. Reading it solidified that I want to be able to make a connection between my designs and the sound - rather than just the existing visuals surrounding the genre.
While reading I also picked up on designer Anthony Burrill discussing how electronic music is built up from lots of little pieces that fit together as well as lots of layers. He also went on to talk about how electronic music is kind of like design in the sense that the creative is working with a machine but it's up to them to 'put a soul in it'.
This gave me lots to think about - a mix of hyper electronic and physical styles? cut up and layered together like 'the little pieces' that electronic music is made up of? It also reminded me of an idea that my initial contextual research gave me - for the production of techno music drum machines from the 1980s are highly prized - such as Roland's TR-808. These drum machines are so visually interesting and I can definitely create some sort of grid from it.
