Jay Vaz is from London but is now based in Leeds. He attended Leeds Arts University a few years ago, which is how I found out about his work.
Vaz makes work predominantly for the music industry - posters, album covers etc. Most notably for me he designed the entire look for Blue Note: Reimagined. I was already a fan of Blue Note and Reid Miles' classic designs, so this project would have been a dream for me. Jay Vaz executed it beautifully, utilising his classic graphic notation, textured style. I really enjoy his work because it has connotations to both current trends and 'retro' style, which is how I'm starting to define my own preferred style.
Vaz would be very useful to use for my creative report as we've started in the same place - Leeds Arts University. We're interested in the same type of design, working in the music industry etc. It would be really beneficial to contact him and ask him about what he did to get to where he is now: working wit top clients, running the Mannequin Collective as well as Dreaming Vinyl.
WHY?
- Vaz works prolifically in the music industry - designing a huge amount of covers, working for Blue Note Records, and more.
- Vaz started his design career at LAU.
- He utilises a nostalgic, 'future retro' style, similar to my own.
