Furthering my research I thought it may be better to focus on something I do feel a little more confident about - rave flyers of the 90s. I watched this this video by Highsnobiety where they discuss the flyers with the actual designers themselves.
This included Frankie Bones:
It was very DIY. Cut and paste logos.
What aesthetic were you trying to bring? It was about peace, we we're trying to bring peace. A lot of gang kids would come to the raves - but it was always peaceful.
Scott Osmond:
Can you explain the vibe inside of a NASA rave? Intense. A sensory overload. As a lighting/ production creative, my job was to make you trip without using drugs. It was an escapism vibe.
NASA became our church - where we could go every Friday to interact with out people, our family.
We had small budgets. We would Xerox [print] them. You've got to make the design pop - you've got to have something cool on the front when you hand it out. As we progressed and began making more money - we began making two colour prints. `
Gregory Homs:
Prior to the 90s flyers were just listing pages, what inspired you to take it to the next level? I think it's amazing what you can do with a piece of paper. It's paper, type, and photographs and so the possibilities are endless. This was an exercise in testing those limits.
