I managed to narrow down my final list of 14 to just 4. I think I came up with a good method of choosing an array of designers.
Firstly, I eliminated Hannah Pahl and OK-RM straight away. Hannah Pahl doesn't work as a full time designer and her practise is mainly Instagram based, which is what I want to avoid in the future, I want to be working on real life, important projects. I also was not impressed with OK-RM as when asked to describe their ideal candidate for an intern, they said Compliant! I agree that any young designer should be complaint to some extent, but it wouldn't be in my top list of qualities to look out for.
Next I categorised my designers into the headings I thought suited them best:
those in the music industry
female-led studios
print studios
individuals who stopped commercial work to do more personal work
individuals who set up their own studios
I then chose just one designer/ studio from each category so that I would have a broad array of practitioners that each represent my different ambitions and interests. They are:
Jay Vaz (music industry designer)
APFEL (female led studio working with fine artists)
Robbie Simon (designer/ illustrator also working in music)
Craig Oldham (Acclaimed designer with amazing theories on design who set up his own studio)
