Jazz Research

- Jazz is the main influence on Nu Jazz
- It's stylistic origins come from folk, blues, soul, and more specifically work songs and field hollers sung by African - American slaves
- Jazz blew up in the 1920's, which F. Scott Fitzgerald coined The Jazz Age
- At this time of Prohibition and illegal speak easy's, Jazz was seen by many as immoral
-John Coltrane, famous Jazz sax player would create 'sheets of sound' by playing multiple notes at once
- Recognisable elements of Jazz include swing and blues notes, as well as improvisation being the defining element
-"The classical performer's goal is to play the piece as it was written. In contrast, Jazz is characterised by the product of interaction and collaboration, with less value of the composer and more on the composer."
- Jazz popularised dance halls and allowed dances like the Charleston and the Argentine tango to be as popular as they are
- Jazz musicians actually turn off a part of their brain when they're playing to allow themselves to improvise. Also, when two Jazz musicians are playing together, or having a 'musical conversation', the language area of the brain becomes active
- In British Sign Language, Jazz hands are used to show applause
- During jam sessions and live performances, hand signals are used amongst the musicians to signal changes that they want to make while improvising
-While listening to Jazz, this activates theta brain waves, and has the same restorative effect as silence
- Blue Note is a popular Jazz record label that took on many of the greatest jazz players. Almost all of the cover designs are by Reid Miles and feature Francis Wolff's iconic photography
