Nu Jazz Research





- Predominantly influenced by Jazz music, mixed with funk, soul, free improvisation, but mostly electronic
- Combines live instruments with house beats or band based improvisation with electronic elements
- Based on grooves, uses drums machines or acoustic drums, bass, and looped samples 
- Noticeable characteristics include digital delays and rhythms made from a single chord or note 
- "Instrumentation ranges from traditional to experimental" tends to use traditional jazz tracks as base tracks and improvise electronic over the top, or improvise both at the same time
- Term Nu-Jazz was invented by Bugge Wesselfort in the late 1990's. Wesselfort is a pioneer of Nu Jazz and was born in Porsgunn, Norway
- "The centre of Jazz has shifted from the pre-occpations of the US to a more multi-cultural Northern Europe
- Includes a lot of ambient synth bass and 'techno texture'
- "You know, they call it 'Mountain Jazz' cause there's so much air and space in the music and it always seems like it's recorded on a mountain"
