Second Zine Experiment

Zine Side

Poster Side

In comparison to the first zine, a better smaller size

Fold out process

Paper cover/ Sun Block

The second zine format went really well! I wanted to try something other than a simple pamphlet stitch bind so I tried a small fold out poster zine instead.

I used the same page layouts but I really wanted to try making a crossword puzzle. Using a simple online generator, I made one using words relating to the two articles within the zine. I really like the outcome of this - I shared it with my friend and we spent five minutes doing the puzzle and the outcome was exactly what I wanted, a short amount of time not looking at the news, or a screen, using your brain, having fun. I think that's it's a great addition to the zine. Some feedback on this however was that I need to put the amount of letters the word has next to the clue e.g - A form of protective eyewear (10). And that phrases with two words need a grey box in the middle, like Elton [] John. I also really want to fill the crossword out with more words so it looks more like the traditional square format.

The fold out format was really successful. It was a lot quicker to produce than the pamphlet stitch bound one and I recon it would be easier to do multiple using one sheet of stock, which is an added bonus as it means less waste. I'm going to try this next - making is smaller but only utilising one story per zine so as to not compromise the readability of the text.

I also really like the two in one feature - the action of folding out the zine to look at the poster definitely feels reminiscent of  handling a newspaper. I also realised that the poster could actually be my 'Paper coverer' idea! I really wanted to incorporate some sort of print that could be used to physically cover newspapers, this way I'm doing it with a clear message but the back would actually have the zine content on too. Although, to get the proportions right it would have to be bigger, A3 size. I'll have to experiment with this after playing around with the smaller size first.
