For the day poster task I started off by scanning in some of the day's headlines. Inspired by Adapt, I wanted to make a statement by covering the front cover of the news with a quote. I wasn't sure when I was developing ideas for what quote to write. As it was a quick task I didn't dwell on it too much - but I definitely struggled with what too actually say.
My identified issue is that the news is so negative and constantly shoved down our throats, the only answer is to switch off but then you become un-informed.
I suppose my aim is too provide people with positive stories from around the world to uplift them as well as inform them, acting as a break from the negative media we are surrounded by.
For my poster, I was focusing on encouraging people to avoid looking at the news as I felt this was an easy statement to make quickly on a poster. In future designs, I definitely want to focus a bit more on the positive news side of things. Instead of encouraging people to look away, guide their eyes towards something better.
While developing the poster I also learnt that to make this bold statement it needed to be clear and simple. I liked the idea of using the newspaper front cover but quickly realised it was way too visually bombarding. Too busy. Dom suggested taking elements from it so I worked with the Sun logo as it's so recognisable. For my quotes, I also used the same typeface they use for their headlines. I really liked the effect of this - as it creates a synonymous link to the news without being too bombarding.
I tried a few quotes out. Asking my friends - they all told me to go with 'The Sun is bad for your brain', as they said it was the most clear message. I didn't agree though, I wanted to inject some humour into it as that's the whole point. I want to make people smile, laugh. So taking the logo and changing it or using it out of context was the right way to go.
I had a brief stint with a cardboard background because it reminded me of a hand-made protest sign. I liked the connotations with sticking it to the man, saying no to the mainstream media, but decided to go with a classic paper texture instead to to further visualise those links to the newspaper.
