I had a crit with Dom and peers to discuss my initial ideas.
Dom mentioned that it's good that I've decided on one specific media to focus on - print. Of course I can include a range of distribution and deliverables but it's good to have one element that it the primary focus. For me, that's printed matter.
I was also asking about how to properly write my brief. I was getting confused about how broad it should be: I know that I want to work with print so should I tell myself to make a zine? I understand a bit better how to approach it now - outlining what I should do whilst giving myself room to explore different avenues.
Shared Ideas:
- SMALL is a good idea, it makes the information more easy to digest.
- How do you limit yourself? For the zine - could the articles just be 100 words long? Is it just the headlines? This could relate to the social media aspect, as the zine could then take you to the social media which has the full story on. This way, I'm taking control of content - curating.
- I was dubious about sharing my Newspaper/ corner shop signage idea as I thought it was too aspirational - but everyone loved it! I had actually forgot that I thought about a more do-able plan which was to create a pop up stand to sell the zines.
- One of my deliverables ideas was to create prints that double up as 'newspaper covers'. Abi mentioned that I could easily make these, fold them up, and include them as part of the zine pack!
- George mentioned how I could include a 'personal news' section where people write in with their own positive news. I really liked this idea and it reminded me of the 'Announcement' section of a traditional newspaper where people announce engagements, funerals, births etc.
- I talked a little bit about how I want it to be accessible for kids as my research showed how children are interested in the news but struggle to engage with it because it isn't aimed at them. I think that the group felt that this target audience was definitely appropriate, but I still want to make it suitable for older audiences too. I'm thinking maybe something similar to headspace's simple design? Dom mentioned greeting cards by Ola which are targeted towards children but very appropriate for adults too because of the simple, minimal design.
Brief Aims:
"Interupt our current relationship with the news"
"Prompting people to change how they communicate with the news"
