I got some really good feedback from my presentation. Paired with the questionnaire that I did, I feel really confident that this is a valid issue that isn't just relevant to me and has a ways to go.
I got given some good ideas and things to think about:
- Putting zines in public spaces is a good idea. One place I could put them is the small public libraries around Leeds (Meanwood Little Library e.g.)
- I could look at the differing issues within both modern and old media formats. For examples, newspapers have a lot wrong with them, but so do news apps. One interesting thing to do would be to be to take traditional news headline jargon and twist it to fit a positive news story.
- Furthermore, I need to think about my audience a lot more. Before my presentation I quickly looked into 'who reads the news' to get a quick statistic but I really need to look into this further. I want to have a better understanding of how different ages interact with news. That way whatever I make will be able to be a lot more engaging with it's audience.
- Pete suggested looking more into the disposition of each big newspaper. He told me that each one has a very strict, almost stereo-typical audience. Who are they aimed at? How does this relate to their political axis?
- In terms of the paper page I saw that felt really inappropriate as it was half covering an irrelevant celeb-pregnancy and half covering a fatal stabbing - Pete told me that this is classic newspaper tactics: instilling a bit of titillation and a little bit of worry - this now makes a lot of sense.
