Private Eye

Private Eye is a British fortnightly satirical and current affairs news magazine, founded in 1961. It is published in London and has been edited by Ian Hislop since 1986. The publication is widely recognised for its prominent criticism and lampooning of public figures.

After my dismay with proper newspapers, my mum actually brought me some of her copies of Private Eye. My mum is very 'into the news' (she keeps up to date with politics, watches the news every night at 6, reads articles on her lunch breaks etc.). It's a strange magazine as it takes a lot of physical and visual elements from a traditional newspaper but is also so different. It's printed on newsprint but is A4 in size, it's mainly words and illustrations and has NO graphic imagery (which is something that I've learnt from my research - as technology has developed, illustrations are used less in traditional papers and graphic content is being used more on more as it's captured on phones - this is really jarring to look through).

Similarly to the work of Harriet Richardson, Private Eye is heavily satirical (It's basically the entire premise of the magazine). For someone who wants to know about current affairs but doesn't want to read a traditional newspaper - it's perfect because it cuts out all the bullshit and looks at everything through an unbiased, satirical lens.

I think within my own work however I really want to focus more on positive news. Flicking through Private Eye, I noticed that although it makes light of situations and pokes fun, it still only really focuses on the negative stories.
