Distribution Ideas

I started looking more closely at how Harriet Richards in particular was distributing her content. For this project, I think I really want to almost 'invade' public space as much as possible. One way of doing this is flyposting. I've never done this but I really like the idea - I could fly post around different areas to target a wide audience - Hyde Park for students, Meanwood for older people? I also really like the idea of flyposting as it was something I was much too scared to do in first year, but am now really eager to try out.

Harriet also shared a post where she had covered up The Sun newspaper with her 'Never Look Directly at The Sun' poster - This obviously wasn't the initial intention for the print, but I really like the idea of actually covering negative headlines with something positive. I could actually incorporate the design into this idea too - making a headline reading 'Read Me Instead!' or 'I'll make you happier!'. Another way that this is really easily done is by making stickers. Harriet has made some, and managed to do so sustainably, as well as online activism group Adapt.

After thinking about these ways of distribution I went on a walk into Chapel Allerton and got some more ideas! I saw a corner shop and remembered that they often have Newspapers as their signs like The Sun (I imagine these papers sponsor the shop?)  I'm sure this project will involve a little bit of branding, whether it just be a logo, but it would be really cool to mockup a corner shop sign. Theoretically, the contents of the shop cold even link to my research and be based on mindfulness.

I also found a house that was giving away free books on their wall. I see this often and I think it's a really nice idea. As well as scattering zines around the city, it could be really nice to make a sign and give some away outside of my house (or in a nearby location) - a lot of people go jogging/ running past my house so I reckon a few would get picked up. I was also thinking - I definitely want to set up a social media page for my idea, I could spread some around so that people could find them but could also sell some for a small price so that people in other cities could have them? Obviously I can't travel at the minute so it would be a nice way of getting to a wider audience rather than just my local area.

Another thing related to social media that I've been thinking about is notifications. I have the BBC News app but (obviously) I don't check it very often. I do have the notifications turned on, however, and it can be a bit jarring. The notification noise is a loud, echoing gong sound that's actually very dramatic. It can go off up to three times an hour with "the latest headlines" - some of which are actually the most irrelevant pieces of news I have ever read - it really is the epitome of being connected 24/7.

I don't think that I will develop my own app as I wold rather spend my time investigating print. However, the idea of positive notifications really interests me. Perhaps I could mirror this somehow using Instagram? I just like the idea of small reminders and uplifting news.
