Designing

Chosen images, edited

Page layouts ideas

Colour scheme

Once I had the format sorted and decided I began designing the page layouts. I started off by choosing examples of Jay's work to use. I picked a range of posters and album artworks, obviously including his work for Blue Note. In the process, I created a bank of about 40 images of his work to pick from.

It was quite a difficult process as most of Jay's work is displayed on Instagram - which lessens the quality, and I had to resort to taking screenshots. Thankfully the lessened quality didn't matter too much as the publication is so small. I subtly edited all of the images using a scanner texture so that they would look harmonious with one another throughout the publication.

I based the colour scheme off the general array of bright but not too bright colours that Jay uses within his work. I wanted them to be similar hues, with a light washed out look.

Also, when I was thinking of how to lay images out, I was really conscious that because of my chosen format, I wouldn't have a lot of space for images. I wanted some full bleed images, but I was aware that I couldn't really make them much smaller without compromising the design. I came of with the idea of framing the images in a funky design as a solution.
