Brief Recap/ Thoughts

The brief recap today was really helpful, I feel that I understand what I need to do a lot better now. I didn't fully understand the whole 'external element before' but now I know that if I do do something self-initiated then there needs to be something external happening - a launch, getting it sold in Village etc. Of course, the work I'm possibly going to be doing for Luke Ellerby (local DJ) is external.

I spoke with Luke yesterday and he was worried that he wouldn't be able to commission me enough work for the whole project as he is setting up a bi-monthly event called 'System', but due to covid this is taking a while to get things off the ground. He does need branding and social media content, but this won't be for a long time. For now he just wants the one poster that I have already designed for him, and a few more to drum up excitement about the event. This obviously wouldn't be enough for a large brief - but I could spend a week on it. I'm going to contact him to explain what I've found out from this morning's re-brief and possibly get something sorted.

Secondly, I asked during the re-brief if it was okay to use past competition briefs - it is, but it needs to have some sort of outward facing element. I think that I want to modify the I-D/ D&AD Sub Culture brief and possibly produce a zine. The outward facing element here could be that I contact Village Books in Leeds and get them to sell the final zine. Also, I could ask for submissions of photos/ stories etc. from people within that sub-genre.

Lastly, my friend Will wants to do a brief that involves getting people to be creative with Arjo wiggins paper stock. He wants to supply designers with the paper and ask them to do something creative with it in their own style. This could be another short brief.

I think that these three options are all strong enough to attempt for this module. The I-D subculture zine would be the brief that I put the most time into. For now, I'm going to make a calendar so that I can visualise how I will split my time up between them.
