Initial Ideas

After the briefing I began thinking about some self-initiated briefs that I could do. I'm not against doing a real live brief, but think that I could do something really interesting that suits me and my design style if I wrote the brief myself.
I began by thinking about what my 'dream briefs' are - work that I 've seen other designers do for clients and thought 'I would love to have done that'.

First was the work that Jay Vaz did for Blue Note: Reimagined. Blue Note created an album with modern musicians covering classic Jazz tracks and commissioned Jay Vaz to do the cover as well as singles, merch, social media content and branding. When I saw this, it was the first time I felt really jealous of another designer, being a fan of Blue Note especially. I also really enjoyed the album cover module last year.

Following on from album covers, I was really in awe of Matt de Jong's cover art for What Kind Music by Tom Misch and Yussef Deyes. I was anticipating the release of the album and when I saw Jong's artwork for the cover as well as the singles I was very jealous of the opportunity.

Lastly, when looking through silk-screen artist Kate Gibb's collection of work, I saw her bi-annual collaboration with skate brand Stussy. This collab involved the re-drawing, colouring, and manipulation of pattern through an experimental silkscreen process, of Stussy's back catalogue of stock logos, callages & popular imagery. This made me realised that I would love to work with a brand in this way. I have done branding before and enjoyed it, but the idea of working with a brand that alsready has a large history and archival imagery is really exciting. Working with archival imagery is something that is always appealing to me.

- Album cover design. Could pick an existing album to re-design or pick an unreleased album.
- Brand campaign. Could pick a brand that has a large archive and create a series of posters.
- Could choose a small business to re-brand.
- Could do the branding for an exhibition/ gallery. Humber Street Gallery in Hull does not have any effective branding; no proper logo, printed media, social media content etc. so could be an opportunity.
