Development

Following on from my star idea, I proceeded to simplify the cover copy in order to produce a minimal cover. I wanted to really focus on the stars and strip it back to the idea. I also have been struggling with focusing on image processing because I struggle with incorporating such a large amount of cover copy, so this was my way of trying to tackle that. I think that the designs I produced, however, are lack-luster and boring. The ones involving collage had a lot more promise to them whereas this completely digital design is too simple. The idea behind it is not witty or clever enough to support such a minimal design. Hence, in the future I will focus more on the practical and physical image making as this produces a better result.

I started to use the simple cover copy layout as a base for my 'holes in science' idea - this developed really quickly and created a lot of outcomes. I really wanted to use a heavy texture as imagery for the cover so I took an object that Bryson discusses in the book - a sponge, and edited / scanned until it was unidentifiable. I played around a lot with holes and layering and produced some nice designs. The best were the ones that had layered up shapes and parts of solid black and white, as this started to make the cover look not so full. Once again, I really struggled with including type. At first the idea was to overlay the texture, however, this resulted in some illegibility and would not be suitable for Penguin. Instead, the solid blocks of type on top of the texture worked better.

I want to still play around with other ideas but I will definitely utilise the scanner more and lean into texture rather than worrying about layout.
