Alongside the development of my final zine design I've been working on stickers to go alongside the publication. As it's essentially a way of further distributing the branding/ a way of advertising I obviously want to include the logo/ QR Code alongside the illustrative ones.
One idea I experimented a little bit with was hi-jacking The National Lottery logo and using it with my smiley logo somehow. I tried a lot of different variations of this that included both replacing the face within their logo with my smiley face and having my smiley face crossing his fingers but none of them really seemed to work. It seemed like a good idea because of the links to Newsagents but it just doesn't seem noticeable? I'm not sure if it seemed like a nice little detail of if it was too far gone. I wanted to edit the stickers down and it didn't make the cut.
One idea that was talked about in relation to The National Lottery logo was the idea of scratch cards. I seriously considered buying some scratch off stickers and making some to put within the zine, but it didn't make it through the refinement process. However, I saw the amazing custom made scratch cards by @north_or_nowt on Instagram that he made because he just 'just had some left over scratch-off stickers lying around'. It was great to see an actual nice visual of a hand-made scratch card. It's definitely made me want to design one for a future edition of Glad Print, probably with a kinder message though.
Whilst thinking about sticker designs I also saw one of @we.sow's zines again - and was inspired by the 'Free' design that they had on their packaging. I was against putting the word 'free' on the cover as I know that I would hopefully be selling the zines online for a small fee as well as randomly distributing them. Instead, I wanted to include something that I could put on the cover that would encourage people to pick it up, so I went with 'Read Me'.
For this, I really wanted to experiment with some hand lettering. Ever since the Bloomberg type project in first year I've been scarred and too scared to even think about designing my own typeface. BUT I've started to really get the urge to overcome my fear (I'm planning on doing 36 days of type over summer). When doodling I often do this semi-blackletter inspired random type with really heavy serifs that's kind of just an exaggerated version of my own hand-writing in all caps. Glad Print feels like a nice place where I can experiment and try things out so I utilised this for this project. It also just works because it fits the tone of voice due to the funky, modern blackletter logo type.
