Radical Matter by Kate Franklin and Carline Till

Franklin, K. and Till, C., 2018. Radical Matter. London: Thames & Hudson.

Key Notes:

- Read Victor Papanek's manifesto: Design For The Real World.
- Find journals about Ecological Design.
- Look into Daan Roosegarde

- Mainstream design has ignored ecological design for centuries at the hands of short term consumerism and for the profit of global shareholders.
- The importance of materials. Our approach towards materials right now is linear: take. make, discard. It needs to be circular: use, re-use, recycle. Designers need to be inventive with what materials they use, ad even using naturally sourced materials can be harmful.
- The tech industry's impact on the environment is astronomical: just as bad, if not worse, than the print industry. This is due to short life cycles, rapid upgrade culture resulting in discarded metals, glass, plastics.

Quotes:

- "Design and ecology should be an integrated practice."
- "Mainstream design ignored this holistic vision to the benefit of short term consumerism and for the profit of global shareholders."
- "Take - make - discard"
- "rethink the design process from the bottom up." (In reference to materiality"
- "Over consumption of raw materials is driving designers to reclaim materials from waste."
- "Turning vice into virtue." (In reference to recycling plastic)
- "Waste should simply not exist, waste is a resource." Daan Roosegarde
