Visiting Professional: Dougal Marwick

Dougal Marwick from Touch Design Agency. Not a hard-core graphic designer but still working in the industry. Not a designer. 'creative/ copywriter'.

Finding a sub-culture changed his life (skateboarding).

After studying a weird visual communication course he got a job as an account executive. He was in the marketing side of the company - he would speak to the client about what they want and acted as a middle man between the client and the design team. It was very boring. This role is good for someone who is diligent and organised. He got fired because he was a junior staff and the company lost money.

He did a bit of freelance copy-writing and then landed a job at Touch.

Touch has been going over 20 years and is established. It's small, fairly well respected and dynamic to a point. They used to be cool, but now are less so. They do a bit more branding now. They're more of a brand agency now. They have between 6-8 people and staff up with freelancers when required.

Crafting nice logos and type is at the heart of what they do.

We love trendy design magazines, G F Smith, and print but our clients don't so we need to keep that in mind.

Moodboard-lord

He does his 'side-hustle' stuff to keep himself relevant and grounded.

Pitches are awful. Design needs to be more diverse. Go with your gut. Be reasonable. Trends are fine. Imposter Syndrome never stops. It can be hard work. (But not that hard.) Go for a walk.

When pitching you have to go in with more than one idea.

If you're going to intern you should get paid. Know your value. You have to work hard and impress people but never work for nothing.
