Email Draft - Jay Vaz

It's been just under a week and Studio NARI haven't gotten back to me. I sent them a follow up email, but thought it best to also contact one of my other designers just in case.

Hi Jay!

Hope you're doing good.

I'm a graphic design student at Leeds Arts Uni and I'm writing a creative report for one of my second year modules. I'm a big fan of your work, so decided to write it on yourself/ The Mannequin Collective!

Obviously studying at the same University as you, it's really inspiring to see the work that you've done and what you've achieved. I'm hoping to also work in the music industry creating covers, posters etc. so I would love to ask you some questions as it would really help with my report.

I've included them in my email, but it's completely up to you how you respond to them if you have the time. An email response would be great but if you would rather answer them by phone or Zoom call that's also fine.

1. You've got a really strong visual style and your art is very recognisable. Do you think it's more beneficial to develop your own style or to be able to adapt to different projects?

2. Your creative studio The Mannequin Collective is based across both Leeds and London. How would you describe the design scenes in both cities? Different, similar, etc? Also, do you think it's more beneficial to be in a bigger city like London in terms of work?

3. I understand that COVID has probably affected your physical way of working, but how has it affected you creatively? Have you struggled working from home, and do you have any tips on how to stay motivated?

4. Your work for Blue Note: Reimagined is amazing. I'm a massive fan of Blue Note and Reid Miles, so it was like a dream project - but you executed it brilliantly. How did you approach that brief? Could you talk me through your ideas and process?

5. What made you want to start The Mannequin Collective so early on in your career? Is collaboration the key to success? Also, have you run into any problems whilst running your own studio?

6. Your work is very nostalgic in style and very music orientated, but what visually inspires you?

7. When you get given a brief, what's the process like from idea to production? Do you workshop, collaborate, work physically or digitally? Does it stay the same for every project or differ?

8. What would you say is the most effective way of booking clients/ getting your name out there? Social media, word of mouth - which is more beneficial?

Thanks again for taking the time to read and I can't wait to hear your responses!
