This particular module has been more challenging than anticipated. Having never studied type specifically before I expected some difficulty, however, I was not prepared for how arduous module OUGD403 would be. Reflecting on the module, I think that the work is not representative of the best that I can do, however, I can certainly say that I tried my best. One of my main weaknesses within the project was continuously thinking about type too literally. I struggled to break out of the box of what a typeface should look like, rather than injecting new and exciting ideas. I also found it difficult to stick to one idea and run with it. For example, my main theme changed from mechanism to motion, as well as my type specimen idea changing three times. This, however, allowed me to explore different styles and ideas within the project. Despite these weaknesses, I think that I was successful at exploring a wide range of ideas when it came to development. Looking back through my work now, I certainly explored a wide range of styles. It is also visible that this module has strengthened my design skills, as my final type specimen is a lot stronger and more confident than the work from the start of the six weeks. The design stage that I enjoyed the most was the very early experimental stage. I really enjoyed collaging and then creating a digital typeface from the collages. Due to this, I now know that in the future this experimental, rougher stage is where I thrive most. The stage that I struggled more with was creating a typeface in direct response to a theme or idea. This, to me, at often times felt forced and rushed and I couldn't refine my designs as much as I wanted to.
I have certainly maintained a good work ethic throughout this project as I have utilised the long studio hours and learned new skills through inductions and by practising myself. For example, type has been a brilliant way to get used to Adobe Illustrator and I feel so much more confident than I did at the beginning of the module. As well as this I really loved learning about bookbinding in an induction, and went on further to have a go at home as well as again in the studio. I can definitely see myself becoming passionate about this as I love to create things by hand, so hopefully I will have an opportunity to re-visit this in a future project.
The workload was a shock to me, and I struggled to keep on top of things at times. I am very passionate about design and want to always do my best, however, I think that this sometimes puts me at a disadvantage because I tend to put too much pressure on myself. During this module when I felt that things were not going as well as they should, I worked myself harder to try and push myself, but upon reflection this had a negative effect. For the future I now know when to take a step back and take a break, because my work will be better for it in the long run.
