I was thinking about how I can incorporate the theme of movement into my design as this theme has come up in my research multiple times.
I thought about producing a zoetrope, however, when I was researching I came across the much more suitable 'cousin of the zoetrope' the Phenakistoscope. These were invented at around the same as the zoetrope but have been used in modern vinyl design as the sticker in the middle of the vinyl many times, probably most famously featured as part of Bombay Bicycle Club's vinyl collection for So Long, See You Tomorrow - were they included an actual Phenakistascope within the packaging.
I think that because movement and dancing has proven so important within the genre of Nu Jazz, it would be really justifiable to include a Phenakistascope somehow in the design. My first thought is to use it as the vinyl sticker and have a circular cut out in the centre of the cover. I could also do what Bombay Bicycle Club have and include a larger version. Never the less, I am going to start morphing my ideas into Phenakistascope's and start to mock it up.
I would love to make an actual working Phenakistascope that moves as the vinyl spins, however, I am unable to do this at home. I saw that an illustrator I follow had been able to make a gif of one and asked her how she made it. I am definitely considering this alternative for my final outcome.
